How to Store Dates

There is a common misconception that Dates are dried fruit. This can make it confusing when trying to figure out how to store your dates. All of the Dates at Coachella’s Best Organic Dates are picked fresh from the Date palms and are packaged immediately. Our Dates do not go through any processing from the time that they are picked to the time they are packaged.

While Dates are fresh fruit, they last longer than other fruits you typically buy at the grocery store. We are going to give you the rundown on the best ways to store Dates so that they last the longest but are delicious when you are ready to eat them.

Not Gonna Eat Them Today
If you have Dates that you’re not planning on eating today or tomorrow we recommend that you store them in the refrigerator. Dates can last in the fridge for up to 12 months! If Dates are in the fridge for a while, they can begin to become more on the stiff side because they are losing their moisture content. You can combat this by storing them in an airtight container such as glass tupperware or a mason jar. If your Dates have already become a little stiff, you can wrap them up in a damp paper towel and throw them in the microwave for five seconds before you eat them or cook with them. Some people like them straight out of the fridge when they are cold and really chewy!

Probably Gonna Eat Them Today
If you love eating Dates every day you can store them in your pantry for 1-3 months. Just make sure that when you’re storing them, they are out of direct sunlight and away from the stove or anything that produces excess heat. If you are planning on eating your Dates today or tomorrow, put them in a brown paper bag and leave them on the counter in order to make them super soft and delicious!

Should I Eat Them Today?
If you are not sure whether your Dates are still edible or not, your five senses are the best way to tell! If your Dates are starting to turn white there is no need to worry! The white coating on your Dates is not mold, it’s just sugar crystals that have formed on the outside and can be easily fixed with our trick above (wrapping them in a damp paper towel and microwaving for five seconds). If your Dates look darker than usual or have any mold, throw them away! Also if they smell or taste odd in any way it is best to toss them and buy new fresh Dates!

We hope this helps you get the most out of your Dates and enjoy them at the perfect time! If you have any questions or want to learn more about Dates contact us at Coachella’s Best Organic Dates!
